Position Title: PHILANTHROPY OFFICER

The Opportunity: The Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA) offers an opportunity to build on a strong existing fundraising base and make your mark by developing and executing innovative strategies to continue to grow a high-impact organization.

Projected to raise approximately $1,600,000 in the coming year, PWA’s fund development program is a mix of an iconic fundraising event, PWA’s Friends for Life Bike Rally, and other traditional fundraising activities such as direct marketing, major giving and grant writing. With a new fund development review conducted by an external consultant, PWA is poised to introduce new initiatives and grow.

The Organization: Since 1987, the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation has been helping men, women and children live with HIV/AIDS. Canada’s largest direct support service provider for people living with HIV/AIDS, PWA is a community-based, registered charity.

Position Summary: The Philanthropy Officer provides support in all areas relating to agency philanthropic and communication activities to promote the mission and services of the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation. You’ll work with current and potential donors, funders and the larger community. The Philanthropy Officer also assists with other agency events and activities.

Accountability: The Philanthropy Officer reports to the Director, Philanthropy & Communications.

Key Responsibilities

PWA Annual Fund

  • Support the Director, Philanthropy & Communications in executing effective individual giving programs
  • Develop and strengthen strategies to increase opportunities for giving (i.e. monthly, online)
  • Lead the production of the PWA Newsletter mailings

PWA Major Donor Program (individual, corporate and foundation)

  • Conduct independent prospect-research
  • Identify suitable Major Gift Prospects
  • Create and maintain Major Gift prospect portfolio
  • Under the guidance of Director, Philanthropy & Communications, develop Major Gift program materials for prospects
  • Maintain PWA recognition and stewardship of Major Donors

Grant/Proposal Writing

  • Conduct prospect research to identify strategic opportunities
  • Coordinate, and where appropriate prepare, submit and report on Foundation and Corporate grants

Stewardship

  • Work with the Director to develop and implement stewardship strategies that strengthen long-term relationships with (major) donors
  • Steward donors through written and personal interactions with particular attention to monthly donors
  • Identify best practices at other organizations for stewardship planning and operation
  • Work in partnership with staff throughout the agency to identify and develop recognition opportunities

PWA & Community Fundraising and Events

  • Promote and manage community special events, 3rd party and community fundraising initiatives in consultation with the Director, Philanthropy & Communications
  • Support the Friends for Life Bike Rally activities during peak periods

Communications

  • Lead effective information sharing with community partners
  • Produce the quarterly agency E-news for donors, partners and clients
  • Coordinate the placement of advertising in print media
  • Manage relevant media articles and information
  • Provide leadership in maintaining and updating the agency website

Administration

  • Provides leadership and coordinates support and training on philanthropy and communications databases and platforms
  • Ensures all data is maintained and up-to-date
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Director, Philanthropy & Communications

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in development and communications activities
  • Applications from Fundraising Program graduates preferred.
  • Post-secondary degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive understanding of philanthropy theory and best practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in campaign management, including foundation and corporate campaigns, individual giving campaigns, renewal and prospecting, cultivation and stewardship, information management, and special event support
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Extensive knowledge of the complexity of issues relating to HIV/AIDS
  • Sensitive to issues of diversity and accessibility
  • Experience with donor databases an important asset. Competence with Abila 50 in particular welcomed
